Behind the scenes: Emblem's collaboration with Branch

Behind the scenes: Emblem's collaboration with Branch
Oct 7, 2020 | By Lindsay Braun

Simple. Affordable. Flexible. When we met the team at Branch, these are the words they used to describe their vision for the commercial furniture buying process. Right away, we knew that we had met our kind of people. Founded in 2018 by commercial real estate veterans, Branch approached Emblem with the idea for a creative, multi-product collaboration.

Taking inspiration from Branch's clean, modern aesthetic, and leveraging our knowledge of commercial-grade construction, we arrived at a unique sofa and lounge chair design.

We used cold-rolled steel to manufacture custom legs that could withstand heavy use, and we selected a flat-woven, commercial-grade fabric that would last for years and resist stains.

When Branch launched their new sofa and chair design in April, the pandemic was ravaging the country and offices in most large cities were shuttered. The founders of Branch had spoken with dozens of their loyal business clients who were thinking strategically about the safe re-opening of their offices. Branch's clients were all asking for the same thing: privacy panels.

While the commercial furniture market isn't short on privacy panel options, Branch wanted to offer something unique: a panel that was brand-agnostic, flexible, inexpensive, and easy enough for one person to assemble quickly.

Jeffrey and I accepted the challenge and started discussing ideas. Primarily, we were concerned with designing a way to affix panels of differing sizes that was flexible and didn't require a permanent or fixed point of connection.

Sitting in our living room, watching our two children beat back the stress of confinement by playing with a cardboard fort, we found our solution.

(Yes, the pandemic isolation and homeschooling is getting REAL for us, too.)

We ordered a roll of Velcro, started cutting out different shapes and sizes, and began testing our hypothesis for a new kind of panel hinge that doubled as a flexible connector. We sourced a commercial-grade, Velcro-ready upholstery fabric and designed the panels in different sizes to insure compatibility not only with Branch's desking collection, but a variety of other desk brands as well.

After a few rounds of prototypes at our workroom in California, Branch successfully launched their full privacy panel system.
